DC AGENDA LAUNCHES

Former Employees of Washington Blade Vow to Continue Mission, Begin New Venture

WASHINGTON, DC — The Washington Blade, formerly the nation's oldest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) newspaper, died on Monday, November 16th, 2009 at 9:30 AM. The 40-year-old paper ceased operation under the weight of its parent company’s financial problems. Window Media’s financial condition and the exact reasons for closing the Washington Blade remain unclear. No statement has been issued by the former executives from Atlanta, Miami or New York regarding how the decision to abruptly shut down the publication was made.

After Monday’s shuttering, 17 former employees vowed to not miss this Friday’s production of Washington DC’s LGBTQ news weekly. Today they delivered on that promise. At 9:30 AM this morning the publication that will replace the Washington Blade – DC Agenda - hit the streets. As demonstrated in the first issue, the new publication provides critical coverage of local and national LGBT issues along with much needed community news.

“The power and effectiveness of the Washington Blade did not die with the name,” said DC Agenda Publisher Lynne Brown, also former Publisher of the Washington Blade and employee of that publication for over 23 years. “That strength actually came from the spirit and intensity of those who wrote the stories and reached out to the community. It’s those same people who are the backbone of this new venture, a group that is the true definition of grit and resilience.”

“It’s been a tough week, but we have been buoyed by the outpouring of support from our colleagues, our community, people all over the city and even beyond DC,” said DC Agenda Editor Kevin Naff. “The DC Agenda represents former Blade employees’ commitment to carry on the important mission and work of the Blade,” said Naff. “We expect this effort to grow and evolve and to eventually include a larger and more diverse group of voices.”

The 17 former Blade staff members, who also celebrated that publications's 40th anniversary last month, hand-distributed the first edition of DC Agenda on Friday November 20th, 2009 at 10:00 AM EST.

“We thank all those who have taken the risk of advertising in our new venture. We also would like to invite readers to visit our new news website at www.dcagenda.com and our temporary support website at www.savetheblade.com.” said Brown. “We are thrilled with what we achieved this week. This early iteration of our new newspaper is modest but…we did it! And we look forward to doing it again next week.” concluded Brown.

WASHINGTON BLADE CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY WITH ONE-OF-A-KIND LGBT HEADLINE AND PHOTO DISPLAY

WASHINGTON — The Washington Blade, the nation’s oldest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) newspaper, today announced plans to commemorate its 40th anniversary with a unique celebration of LGBT history as told through headlines and photographs from its extensive archives.

“We’re proud to mark 40 years of continuous coverage of LGBT news and events on behalf of our readers and advertisers,” said Washington Blade publisher Lynne Brown. “We look forward to continuing our long tradition of supporting and serving our local LGBT community as a trusted source of news and information.”

The Washington Blade debuted in October 1969 as a one-sheet newsletter distributed in Washington D.C.’s gay bars. Forty years later, the Washington Blade has 500,000 unique monthly web site visitors, a robust weekly newspaper distributed in three states and the District of Columbia and offices in the prestigious National Press Building. The Washington Blade’s recently re-launched web site provides daily news updates, video, blogs and a Twitter feed with more followers than any other LGBT news provider.

Washington Blade writers and editors have won dozens of awards for their journalism and the paper has been recognized often for its community involvement over the past four decades. Recent honors include the 2009 Esteem Award for Best Newspaper from Windy City Black Pride and two 2009 Society of Professional Journalists Dateline awards - one each for editorial writing and arts criticism.

“The Washington Blade’s commitment to excellence in journalism is stronger than ever as we evolve from a traditional weekly printed paper found at locations throughout the city to a vibrant 24/7 LGBT online news destination read by the LGBT community worldwide,” said Editor Kevin Naff.

To mark 40 years of providing unique LGBT content and covering national political developments on behalf of the worldwide LGBT community, the Washington Blade plans a special commemorative anniversary edition that will hit newsstands on October 16th. The special issue will include a ranking of the top 40 headlines from its pages over the decades along with photographs from the paper’s extensive and one-of-a-kind archive. The Washington Blade staff will also celebrate the publication’s 40 years as the LGBT newspaper of record with an invitation-only reception on October 22 at the Harman Center for the Arts. For press credentials to the event, contact Lynne Brown or Kevin Naff.

WASHINGTON, DC CONGRATULATES HOST WINNER FOR THE 2014 GAY GAMES

COLOGNE, GERMANY – In a much anticipated announcement from the Federation of Gay Games, Cleveland, Ohio was selected today as the winning city to host the 2014 Gay Games. The Games are quadrennial and boast worldwide participation.  Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Washington Gaymes committee fought hard to win the bid amid a tough, three-way competition that also included Boston, Massachusetts.  The announcement of the winning city was delivered by members of the Board of the Federation at their annual meeting in Cologne, Germany.

"We’re grateful to the leadership of the Federation of Gay Games for giving us the opportunity to bid on Gay Game IX," said Vince Micone, President of the Metropolitan Washington Gaymes bid committee. "And we congratulate the winners. Their team did an outstanding job. We wish them all the best and look forward to having Washington, D.C.’s multitude of LGBT sports teams participate in the Gay Games in 2014."

The delegation in Cologne from the Metropolitan Washington Gaymes committee included President Vince Micone and Vice President Lynne Brown along with Deputy D.C. Mayor Valerie Santos, D.C. City Councilmember David Catania and representatives from Destination DC, the Greater Washington Sports Alliance, Team DC and members of the Board of the Metropolitan Washington Gaymes.

PRESIDENT OBAMA REACHES OUT TO LGBT COMMUNITY REGARDING HEALTH CARE POLICY
Employed lesbian mother lacks health insurance to treat breast lump

WASHINGTON - An employed lesbian mother of 4 and grandmother of 8 whose breast lump is untreated because she cannot afford health insurance will sit in Michelle Obama's box during President Obama's September 9 speech to Congress on health care.

Ms. Easter Spencer of Washington D.C.  found a lump in her breast in June 2009. After seeking advice from Mautner Project: The National Lesbian Health Organization, the lump was diagnosed at Washington Medical Center as benign. Doctors told her that she should have it removed. However, Ms. Spencer does not have the money to pay for the procedure.

Ms. Spencer is a volunteer with Mautner Project: The National Lesbian Health Organization which provides direct services to lesbians with cancer, and educates
health care providers and the LGBT community about the need for preventive care.

"Lesbians as a group are underinsured and medically underserved," said Leslie Calman, Ph.D., Executive Director of Mautner Project. "Lesbians are often self-employed, or work in low-paying jobs. They are, for the most part, not married -- and, for women, being married is the best predictor of health insurance coverage. As a result, lesbians often cannot access the healthcare they need. Getting a program in place that will provide coverage to all is absolutely critical to the lesbian community."

Ms. Spencer is eligible to get insurance through her employer, but does not carry it because of the expense. She is doubtful that she will elect to carry insurance in 2010, even knowing her condition, because she cannot afford to pay the premiums.

WOMEN, BOI’S, TRANS, GURLS AND GIRLS IN THE HOUSE AT ALTERNATIVE WASHINGTON, D.C. CONCERT

New York Based BETTY Returns To DC For Full-Length Concert & I Miami Alt Band State Of Is Introduced to D.C.

WASHINGTONWomen’s alternative entertainment producer Alexander Oropeza is bringing cult band BETTY to the 9:30 Club this month for the band’s first concert in Washington, D.C. in over a year. The locally based alt-entertainment promoters are raising the stakes this fall with the over-the-top antics of D.C.-favorite BETTY and Miami-based opening act - State Of.

BETTY will be performing music from their first studio album in four years, “Bright & Dark.” This album “is BETTY’s most accessible pop project to date,” according to band member Amy Ziff. Throughout the writing and recording of the album, lifelong friends and collaborators Amy Ziff, Elizabeth Ziff and Alyson Palmer struggled through the process of Elizabeth’s breast cancer to “cathartic new heights of love and brightness,” said Ziff.

The creative result is a fun, sexy, sad, happy, hard-hitting, dramatic, fierce, playful, tongue-in-cheek pop contradiction album with enormous dancibility. The 9:30 Club appearance will be BETTY’s first full-length concert since Elizabeth’s recovery from her cancer.

The opening band for the September 20th concert at the 930 Club is State Of, a product of the marriage between the band’s Steph Taylor - edgy piano/synth player - and electronic-like live drummer - Nabedi Osorio. State Of’s dark-pop sensibility reflects their hometown music scene in Miami and is reminiscent of artists ranging from the Eurythmics and Bjork to Radiohead and the Police.

STABBING OF TRANSGENDER FRIENDS ON Q STREET TRAGIC EXAMPLE OF HATE AND DISCRIMINATION

Statement FromTransgender Health Empowerment (T.H.E)

“Transgender Health Empowerment of Washington is appalled, sickened and saddened by the tragic stabbing of two transgender women on the night of August 26 in the Q Street corridor of Northwest Washington, D.C. One of the women, Tyli’a Mack, died at the scene and as of the writing of this release the second woman is listed in critical condition at Washington Hospital Center. Tyli’a Mack was 21 years of age.

“As our organization strives to enhance the quality of life of the diverse transgender populations throughout the Metro Washington, D.C. area we are too often reminded that even our basic right to life without hate and the threat of violence and even death is in constant jeopardy.

“As members of the Transgender community we are too well aware of the mental and physical effects of threats and violence. The violent attack on August 26th is one in a long string of violence against transgender people in Metro D.C. area. While some call for us to remain hidden or anonymous because of their prejudice, T.H.E. is one of the few transgender service providers in the Washington area with a client base that continues to grow and to seek our help.

“This act of extreme violence comes at a time when District budget cuts threaten to severely deplete our organizations funds. However our resolve remains. We are committed to a continued provision of supportive housing, health guidance, disease prevention awareness, and other related programs that positively impact the lives of our diverse populations in Washington.

“Transgender Health Empowerment extends its heartfelt condolences to all those in our community affected by the loss of Tyli’a Mack and the severe injury of her friend.  The members and Board of T.H.E. continue to believe that we are all members of the same family…….the human family and we will continue to act accordingly.”
